Public Speaking – Why you fear it

Most of you fear public speaking.

public speaking

Most of you will avoid it because you fear it.

Some of you will grab the bull by the horns and go out and do it.

Some of you may even be good at it.

BUT unless you have a good coach, none of you will be great at it.

There are so many reasons why we are terrified of public speaking and it goes back to our childhood.   Parents who told you to be seen and not heard.   Teachers telling you to be quiet in class.   The old adage that we should not talk about ourselves, or show off, or try to be better than others at something.   The list goes on.  As we get older, we take all this in and then one day you have to stand in front of a crowd of strangers and tell them what you do.    No wonder we go running for the hills at the prospect.

As a business owner, you need to get over this fear and change the way you think about public speaking.   You need to the following thing.   The one thing that will begin your road to enjoying speaking to groups of people.   The one thing necessary before you can become a great speaker.

There I have said it.   When you speak in public, it is not about you.   An audience has gathered to listen to what you have to say.  To hopefully find an answer to a problem they have.  If you are lucky they have paid good money to hear you speak.    What they don’t want is someone standing at the front worrying about themselves.    What they look like, will people like me, will I remember etc. etc.    They want you to tell them what you know so they can go home with some information that is of use to them.

Some of the things that will give you nerves are:

  • Not knowing what you are talking about
  • Not being prepared
  • Not practicing
  • Not knowing who your audience are
  • Only thinking about yourself

Get over this and master the art of public speaking and found out how your nerves can be bought under control and you become the go-to person within your industry.
